With digital video measurement microscopes, all features seen within the field of view (FOV) can be measured. For instance, if a system provides maximum field of view of 2 inches, then the maximum length you can measure is up to 2 inches. If you want to measure size larger than 2 inches, then you have to use a reducer to decrease magnification and increase field of view size. To ensure accuracy, the feature that you want to measure should take up at least 50% of field of view; the more screen space the component you’d like to measure takes up within FOV, the higher the measurement accuracy will be. Typical measurement tools found within the measurement software include point-to-point distance, line width, circle, angle, area, and more.
Most QC, FA and R&D departments in the electronics and industrial industry use manual video measurement systems for in-depth, detailed inspection and documentation. For production line or high volume applications, you may want to consider manual or automated programmable type measurement systems for efficiency and repeatability. Edge Detection Tool, which allows the software to auto select the points on an image with good contrast and also helps with repeatability, is available on some higher end systems. For measurements within 2 inch to 24 inch size range requiring high accuracy, dedicated XYZ Measurement systems with encoded xyz manual or motorized stage are recommended.
HD802 vs. HD806: Video Measurement with Detent Click Stops for Repeatability
For video measurement without the need for a dedicated computer for operation, we recommend manual focus HD802 or HD806 system. Both systems have integrated measurement tools built into the camera, which can be used when hooked up to any HD monitor via HDMI output. All tools and functions can be easily controlled by mouse connected to USB port. Having a standalone digital microscope system with integrated measurement capabilities can save you both on cost and foot print on the work space.
Both systems have detent click stops lens for better measurement repeatability. Since multiple measurement calibrations can be saved for future reference, calibration is recommended during initial set up for each detent click stop in anticipation of later use. As long as the lens settings remain the same, stored calibration can be recalled for instant measurement. If needed, both systems can also be connected directly to computer via USB port if you prefer to operate image processing and video measurement on PC-side software instead.

MX8000 vs. Omni-Core: Video Measurement with Auto Calibration Tracking & Edge Detection
More sophisticated video measurement systems with auto calibration tracking are available for applications requiring automated procedures with easy repeatability. With auto calibration tracking, the system automatically tracks magnification change of the zoom lens from low to high (i.e. larger to small field of view), removing the need to recalibrate or call up the appropriate pre-saved calibration settings. The tracking feature exists within the integrated software inside the camera’s CPU, so no computer connection is needed.

XY Measurement Stages Pair Well with Video Measurement Software
All digital video measurement microscopes and optical microscopes can also be integrated with simple XY measurement stage for simple linear distance application. Most XY stages can have 1”x1” (25mm x 25mm) or 2”x2” (50mm x 50mm) measurement range with up to 1 micron resolution accuracy. Some measurement stages can also be customized with motorized stage and digital read out for special applications.
XYZ Measurement Systems
For applications that require measuring longer distances ranging from 2” up to 24” with high accuracy, we recommend going with XYZ measurement systems, which can be configured with manual or motorized stage with excellent precision to deliver a refined measurement experience.
